The Park Record: “One Tree Hill” creates a Sundance-esque scene on Main Street

The Wasatch Valley Film Festival took over Main Street on Wednesday, bringing out some stars and a crowd of celebrity gawkers, just like the Sundance Film Festival does each January.

Sundance organizers need not worry about competition, though. The Wasatch Valley Film Festival is a make-believe event. It does not seem likely it will be back.

The fictional film festival will be the setting for an upcoming episode of the popular television series “One Tree Hill,” and the show’s cast and crew taped in various locations around Park City this week, with the Main Street location on Wednesday drawing the most attention.

Fans lined the sidewalks close to the Egyptian Theatre in the middle of the afternoon to watch the shoot, which required a small stretch of Main Street to be closed to traffic. Crew members repeatedly shouted “rolling, quiet, please” as each take started. The end of the action was capped with the yell of “cut.”

The scene centered on the first showing of a movie made by one of the “One Tree Hill” characters. One of the lines, read by cast member Gregory Harrison, was “It’s the premier of our movie.”

The Egyptian’s marquee was changed for the filming to read “Seven Dreams ‘Til Tuesday,” apparently the name of the fictional film in the episode. Light poles close to the Egyptian were decorated with banners advertising the Wasatch Valley Film Festival. Extras were sent walking in front of the Egyptian during the repeated takes.

The crowd watched from a variety of vantages, including many from across Main Street, and relished the rare chance to see one of their favorite shows tape in person. The “One Tree Hill” crew members blocked pedestrians from walking on sidewalks within camera view while tape was rolling. Some of the cast members briefly spoke with the crowd and took snapshots with the fans, who traveled to Park City from across northern Utah.

“I about had a heart attack,” said Roselia Cedillo, who is from Brigham City and has been a “One Tree Hill” fan since its first season, adding, “I was so happy.”
