Rising pop star Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) found herself back where it all began on Monday’s rockin’ episode of One Tree Hill (8/7c, The CW). “She’s just coming off her tour and it’s her triumphant return to Tree Hill,” reveals creator Mark Schwahn. “It was a big concert episode for us.” Galeotti performed three of her own songs in the episode, as well as a gem from the ’80s. “She does a big, bombastic version of Pat Benatar’s ‘We Belong’—with kettle drummers!” says Schwahn, who was unaware of Galeotti’s vocal prowess when she was first cast. A happy accident? “It really was. So we ended up telling a story about how Haley only sang in private. Then she sang for Nathan and it became a big part of their love story,” he says.
In costar Michael Grubbs’ case, his musical talent landed him the role of Tric’s musical bartender. Schwahn was wowed by the singer-songwriter at a recent New York City open-mike night. “He was so talented, and I had the ability to shine a spotlight on him, so I did,” says Schwahn, who asked Grubbs to perform his song “Brooklyn” on Tree Hill. (Schwahn’s music label will co-release a CD by Grubbs’ band, Wakey!Wakey!, next month.) It’s a job perk this avid music lover takes to heart. “I see the show as an opportunity,” says Schwahn. “Each week, I’m putting this music on TV and saying, ‘Here are five songs you have to hear.’ It’s like I’m making a little mix tape for the world.”
